Also...wondering what anchor you use as your main around tackle?

We are 56' 40 tons wooden. Currently Dragging a 125 pound CQR around a bit.

See the current issue of SAIL magazine for one such adventure!

We have a 65 Mantis with all chain for our main anchor. The recommended storm anchor size is 55 pounds for our 38’ 20 ton boat, but we live at anchor over 300 days a year, so bigger is better :-)

We do, too! And agree. Marinas are not our style or budget so we just drop every chance we get. Tell me about the Mantis and why you like it, please, if you have a moment.....where does it hold best? downfalls? Issues? how did you choose it?

Thanks.

We had a 65 pound Delta and dragged twice - both times at night, of course. So we began looking for a new anchor. I read much online but it was unhelpful. Everyone has an opinion without much facts.. I talked to cruisers we met and those with Rocna and Mantis anchors were uniformly happy. So I focused on those two.

In the end, our friend gave us a 50% off on the new Mantis (he was/is a dealer), so it made the decision very easy.

We had it for about 6 months but only used it in Florida and Bahamas. No dragging, sets on first try, comes up easy.

I have no data on how it behaves in mud yet, but the owners I spoke with claim that’s the biggest strength. I will update once we get to muddy bottoms in Chesapeake and then rocky Maine.

Mantis are of quite large dimension for the weight - the roll bar is huge, so you need a large bowsprit and roller.

We have the same love of all water creatures!! Sounds like you saw a Spotted Eagle Ray. So graceful and rare!

Enjoy the balance of the 🇧🇸 Bahamas. Such a special, soulful place.
